This year was a great success for
the annual state-wide food drive sponsored by ACSUM. Thanks to everyone
who helped coordinate the drives as well as those who donated to these
very worthy causes.
Below is a summary of the results

Well I'm happy to announce that it was
another successful year! At a time that's tough for all of us in one
way or another, people came through in style ~ we collected $145.00
and over 25 boxes and numerous bags of food during our two week drive!!!
Thank you to everyone who donated!

We just finished collecting (whew!)
for the Portland/Gorham 3rd Annual "Have a Heart" Food Drive.
This was the best year yet (so far that is). We collected enough people
food for the Preblet Street Resource Center to overflow the back of
a pick-up truck and collected $130 in cash for them. The Westbrook Animal
Refuge League will get a filled SUV and $145!
Special thanks to all of the Portland/Gorham site contacts: Chris Long,
Kerry Sullivan, Joy Elsner, Greg Stowe, Shannon O'Connor, Victoria Durant,
Chris Harriman, Kyle Stuart, Ana Mercado, Rose Mahoney, June Heggeman,
Crystal Wilder, Jan Limpert.
Also a BIG thanks goes out to the following for lending their hearts,
hands and especially backs in the packing, loading up and delivering
on collection day:
Chris Long, Dan Vachon, SWO Senior Student! His muscles were MUCH appreciated!
- Rose Miller, Karen Glidden, Sherry McCall, and to our wonderful leader,
President Loraine Lowell who puts in overtime on all of our projects,
including this one!
All of you made my job of coordinator so much easier. I couldn't have
done it without all of you! We connected more this year with students
and student groups - The Student Nurses Association and The USM Student
Senate! We would love even more student involvement in the future! A
comment from a volunteer at the Preble Street Resource Center when she
saw the overflowing truck:
"This is a huge delivery for us. It is really appreciated at this
time of year as donations are limited right now!"
Thank you to everyone who donation items on the Portland and Gorham
campuses. This is truly a gift from the heart.

Our annual "Have a Heart"
food drive was a tremendous success. We are so pleased and thank everyone
who participated. We collected approximately 315 pounds of pet food/supplies
and approx. 166 pounds of people food. We also collected cash and checks
to the tune of $65 for EACH organization. Debi and I delivered to the
Sabattus Animal Shelter and the animal control officer was very
appreciative of all that was brought over. It's a small shelter but
after delivering there both Debi and I felt very comfortable that they
were the recipients of the goods this year.
As for the food pantry, a volunteer
from the food pantry delivered the goods. I will see the coordinator
of the pantry on Sunday and get her reaction at that time, although
I'm sure she was most grateful. They purchase food from Good Shepherd
so I'm sure they can get quite a bit for the $65. Other donors were
WalMart, Stevens Hardware in Sabattus, Shaw's, and Pet Quarters.
Again, thanks so much for all you've done.

Consider this a heartfelt note of gratitude
to the entire campus community for your contributions to ACSUM's 4th
annual "From the Heart" food drive. Thanks to your generosity,
we were able to donate many much-needed items to a local food pantry
as well as the Franklin County Animal Shelter.
The donations were gratefully received,
especially at the Care and Share Food Closet where many bare shelves
were rapidly filled. Thanks, too, to Dot Chouinard, Janine Bonk, Kristin
Hannaford, Wendy Browning, Nancy Barker, Sandy Yeaton, and Darlene Twitchell
for their assistance in a most successful effort.
