Five Little Fingers

Helps you remember the Ten Commandments

When God his ten commandments wrote on tablets with his finger, He hoped that in our memory those laws would ever linger. (Exodus 31:18)

Impress them on your children 'ere you sleep and when you wake, and tie them on your fingers so these laws you don't forsake. (Deuteronomy 6:7-8)

So, if obeying God's commands is truly your desire, you'll find herein a clever plan – it's one that will inspire!

– YOU SEE –

The Chinese do their counting up to ten on just one hand... so memorise these pictures, and the rest you'll understand.

I

The index finger – no. 1 – stands all alone, you see.

For there's just one almighty God; you're wise if you agree!

"Thou shalt have no other idols before me." (Exodus 20:3)

II

The most high God in heaven above

No false Gods will allow;

Two fingers help us keep in mind

To idols not to bow!

"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image... of anything... thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them." (Exodus 20:4-5)

III

There's just one God,yet,

Three in one – a mystery divine!

God wants us to respect his name...

Three fingers are your sign!

"Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." (Exodus 20:7)

IV

One day each week God set aside

For rest for great and small.

Use your four fingers twice around

These eight words to recall:

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." (Exodus 20:8)

V

God's law to honour parents

I can surely understand.

To them I am indebted

For the five fingers on my hand!

"Honour thy father and mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee." (Exodus 20:12)

VI

The thumb's stronger than the pinkie,

which makes it clear

That we should stop the urge to fight,

For that's when murder's near.

"Thou shalt not kill." (Exodus 20:13)

VII

Two women for one man (the thumb)

Is surely not God's plan:

Adultery he calls it,

And this practice he would ban!

"Thou shalt not commit adultery" (Exodus 20:14)

VIII

Now number eight you can't forget –

For see? It is a gun!

The robber steals what is not his

With weapons, then must run!

"Thou shalt not steal." (Exodus 20:15)

IX

The crooked finger pictured here

The ninth law will recall:

A lie is bent and twisted,

While the truth stands straight and tall.

"Thou shalt not bear false witness." (Exodus 20:16)

X

"Get all you can, can all you get!"

So says this hand clenched tight;

The tenth command – the last,

not least – says it exactly right:

"Thou shalt not covet... anything" (Exodus 20:17)

Jesus said:

Don't misunderstand why I have come – it isn't to cancel the laws of Moses... I came to fulfill them... Every law in the book will continue until its purpose is achieved... those who teach God's laws and obey them shall be great in the kingdom of heaven. – Matthew 5:17-19 (LNT)

"Now why should I obey these laws?"

Perhaps you may inquire.

"By keeping all these laws of God, shall I escape Hell's fire?"

No, keeping laws is not the way to heaven – that's for sure!

The law just shows our sinful state – God's Holy, we're impure.

Confess your sin, Christ will forgive and cleanse your sinful heart; then let God's laws direct your life – that's wisdom on your part.
