Birth Death & Marriage information from Parkes Historical Society
James Yeo travelled to NSW with his Cousin George Shapland Yeo, and their
uncle and aunt, James and Elizabeth Yeo (formerly Yeo) and family.
They arrived in Melbourne on the 'James Baines' on 12 February, 1855.
From the James Baines they transferred to the ' Hellespont' on 17February
1855 which sailed directly to Newcastle. James, Elizabeth and childrensettled
at Morpeth, where over the years they would be host to the various Yeos
who called at the port to pick up supplies. This changed when therailway came
to Dunedoo. Both James and Elizabeth were large people. James rode a
light draught horse and had a special saddle designed to hold his stomach.
James Yeo made sure that all his sons owned/inherited properties.
The girls were expected to marry well. Two girls married teachers and one
Mary Elizabeth married Charles Nott, a farmer. James Yeo's will leftproperty
to the male line only. Samuel the youngest son inherited the originalfamily property
now called "Yeovil le ". "Yeoville" was inherited by Eddie and Sam'sonly surviving son,
"Bill" and now belongs to "Bill" and Irene's only son, Warren Yeo.
This piece was written by James's youngest son Sam for part of aNewspaper article called
"Some Local Yeo History"
"There were no main roads in those days, and how they crossed rivers, even the Castleragh
and many creeks and also high hills - no bridges those days - one cannotimagine;
and there were no fenced properties, if any, very few. The bullocks wereturned out at night,
and had to be found next morning, also if any of the team died, it hadto be relaced by another,
often by a wild beast.
Weather conditions too were not always favourable and often the teamstershad to wait
for a week, or longer for the rivers to become crossable and evenconstant rain on the black
soil retarded their progress. After a few years, despite all thedrawbacks, he became the owne
r of a horse team - just pause and think how was it possible in thosehard days to save enough
cash to make the change over. Horses were certainly cheap in thosebygone days, but the money
earned by carting was also cheap. James often mentioned when he wasmarried, they only
possessed in cash five shillings......"
This is a transcript of James Yeo's will:
"This is the last will and testament of me, James Yeo of Bolara in thecounty

Son Samuel said of his Father
- He was a most unassuming man, honest and truthful and never used
bad language and was respected by all persons he came into contact with.Father
I am told, although of good disposition could look after himself and veryfew
would provoke him a second time.." Like his cousin, George, James Yeo was
an excellent rider, who loved and understood his horses.
It is not known whether James belonged to the Masonic Lodge or was a
member of the agricultural Committee. His son Samuel did continue in theYeo
Tradition of involvement in the Community affairs.
