"ElizaYeo 1840 - 1917
One of the real characters of Morethoe. Born in 1840, Eliza Ashford wasthe second daughter of Samuel Ashford and his wife Mary, nee Watts.
Eliza married at fourteen to one John Yeo who was reputed to have been afugitive from justice having killed a man in a cornfield in a pitchforkbattle in a neighbouring county (country - Wales?) In those days, toescape from one county to another gave immunity from presecution.
Imagine then, this fourteen year old bride betrothed to one who waspossibly wanted by the law.
John, although a tough customer undoubtedly met his match in Eliza. Itwas her children's considered opinion that she was the boss of thefamily. Both John and Eliza worked long hard hours to bring up theirlarge family. Eleven of their children grew to maturity, Thomas, Samuel,Sarah, Edith, Mary, George, Rhoda, Sidney, Bertha, Alfred and Alice.Several babies were lost in childbirth including to sets of twins.
John worked as a labourer and was involved in the building of the firstlighthouse at Bullpoint and the golf links constructed in Lee.
In between producing her babies every one or two years, Eliza turned herattention to the early tourest trade. She obtained a donkey and cart andferried tourists between Morthoe and Woolacombe over what was then a veryrough track and the only way into Woolacombe.
During the winter she would carry quantities of limpets up from the beachwhich, chopped with nettles and boiled, she fed to her baby ducks untilthey were one month old. She then sold the ducks on to Mr Challacombe atShaftsborough Farm for sixpence each.
Food was a scarce commodity and like other families in the parish, theirdiet consisted mainly of laver, limpets and 'cooked pig'. 'Cooked pig'was killed and salted down twice a year. Fresh meat was a virtuallyunknown luxury apart from rabbit, Herrings were caught and salted duringthe Autumn for winter food.
All of Eliza's eleven children knew hunger.
The older boys used to be sent to the mill in Lee for flour which Elizawould hastily make into balls of dough which she would fry to stem theirhunger whilst she made the bread.
In 1874 when the railway arrived in Mortehoe, Eliza began to take payingguests at her cottage at the top of the path to Rockham Bay - Sea ViewCottage. Fifteen minutes before serving meals, Eliza could be heardsummonsing her guests by standing in front of her cottage and ringing"Long and Loud" a brass bell which could be heard all the way to Rockham.
Eliza died in 1917 at the age of 77 years. In her later years she madeup for all her hard work by frequently taking to her bed and expectingher eleven children to wait on her.
Many of Eliza's children lived to their nineties and one daughter,Bertha, lived to be one hundred and one,
A large number of Gammons, Yeos, Ashfords and Watts continue to live inthe parish and they are all related to one another through Eliza. Two ofher descendents, Nick Yeo, her great grandson and Peter Bradshaw, hergreat, great grandson worked on the conversion of this building during1995"
