The Plague Dogs

Welcome to my Plague Dogs Photo Gallery. While most people are familiar with Richard Adams' other novel, Watership Down, only the die hard fans would remember another novel of his, The Plague Dogs. The novel has also been turned into an animated movie by the same folks who did Watership Down.

About the novel/movie

Just like Watership Down, The Plague Dogs is definitely not about cute fluffy animals going on funny adventures. TPD is considerably darker and more depressing than Watership Down, concentrating on the horrors of animal testing. I wouldn't be surprised if people reading or viewing this novel/book go on to become animal activists or are at least become more concerned about animal rights.

The novel/movie centers on two dogs, a black mixed breed named Rowf and a smooth-haired fox terrier named Snitter, who escape from Animal Research - Scientific and Experiemental (check out the initials). Now free, they eventually meet the tod (british term for fox) who teach them how to survive in the wild while avoiding those hunting them, for they are believed to be carriers of bubonic plague.

The movie is considerably different from the novel. While the novel concentrated equally on the animals and the humans, the movie tells more of the dog's side of the story. Some of the plot has been altered as well, such as how Snitter came to be in the research center in the first place. Regardless, both the novel and the movie are good, and I recommend them to anyone. Don't be fooled by the fact it's an animated movie. There's no happy stuff here, folks. It's grim, dark and depressing. It will give you something to think about once it's over.

Updated April 11th, 2005!

I have purchased the DVD several days ago so I removed all my images and replaced them with DVD quality images! If you're looking for the movie, nows your chance to get it! Unfortunately, all the DVDs released so far are edited and in full screen, but it's better than nothing. I got my copy at HMV for a measly $10.99 CAD! The cheap price is sure attractive! Unfortunately, I don't think the DVD has been released in the States, as it's not listed on Amazon.com. You can, however, buy it from Amazon.ca. It's $9.95.

Now, onto the gallery! I am planning on taking more images soon.

Links

Believe it or not, there are other people with webpages dedicated to The Plague Dogs. Who knows if they've been inspired after seeing my page, or I've just never known about them until I came across them, but here they are for your viewing enjoyment.

The Plague Dogs: The best TPD site, period. It has lots of stuff including on-location pictures, the full script, and lots of memorablilia.
Tim Mancusi Design and Illustration - It's great when people who worked on "insert the subject of your webpage here" manage to stumble their way onto your webpage. Tim is such a person. He was an artist in the ink and paint department. While his page isn't exactly TPD related, he did work on the movie and he linked to my TPD page in his resumé :3
Loyalty? The Plague Dogs Fanlisting: If you're a fan of TPD, then it wouldn't hurt to join the fanlisting dedicated to the movie. Unlike webrings, fanlistings do not require a website in order to join, so what are you waiting for?
