Mount Baldy

Scrambling with Mark.

Our first attempt at a moderate scramble and definitely a good one. The only moderate part of the trip was a 2 m downclimb about a third of the way up.  A significant drop-off (probably fatal if you slipped) made the downclimb a little unnerving for me, but Mark went first and helped me down. From there the climb to the summit was very interesting and relatively easy, although we took a more difficult, direct route that required some hands-on scrambling.

It was beautiful at the top and we considered the traverse, but decided to save it for another day. The descent was quite quick and going up the "downclimb" was considerably easier. A very enjoyable scramble.

Mount Baldy II

  • Mountain height: 2,192 m (7,198 feet)
  • Elevation gain: 800 m
  • Ascent time: 1:20
  • Descent time: 50 minutes

Solo scramble.

My intended goal was Exshaw Ridge, however, the miserable weather would have probably detracted from the scenery and view and so I opted to return to Mount Baldy for a second ascent. My goal was to attempt the traverse to the south peak.

Unfortunately, 20 minutes into the hike it started to rain steadily and so I decided to forego the ridge, traversing below on the right. The remainder of the hike was easy and it took me only 1 hour, 20 minutes to summit. After a short rest, I headed south along the summit ridge in order to attempt the traverse to the south peak. Once again it started to rain and I had to wait for it to stop. Getting down to the ridge is certainly not for novices. Although there were good foot and handholds throughout, the terrain was very steep and somewhat exposed. I descended very slowly, but a large amount of snow on the ridge halted my progress. The traverse will have to wait.

Scrambling with Mark.

This was my third time up Mount Baldy and our first after-work scramble. We started just after 6 pm on this warm, Tuesday evening. If time permitted, we were hoping a traverse to the south peak might be possible. Our ascent time was a respectable hour and a half, however, even as we approached the summit, the sun was starting to set, quashing our traverse plans. We settled for a beautiful view of the surroundings as the sun slowly descended. Overall, a very pleasant and enjoyable evening - I hope this is the first of more than a few evening scrambles.

Mount Baldy IV

  • Elevation gain: 800 m
  • Ascent time: 2:50
  • Descent time: 1:30

Scrambling with Colleen. A very relaxing and once again pleasant trip up Mount Baldy. The only downside was a very strong and gusty wind from the south that prevented us from ascending the ridge and doing the moderate downclimb. There was very little snow on the mountain, making the ascent quite easy. We saw some great places to do some climbing on the south side of the ridge. Once again, I was unable to do the traverse over to the south peak. The strong wind would have made it very dangerous without good protection. My fourth trip to the summit and I still find it to be a very enjoyable excursion.
