Round-trip time: 7:30
Scrambling with Mark.
The Fist was our first "difficult" rated scramble and is a great little trip. I strongly recomend it for scramblers moving from "moderate" to "difficult" routes. The difficult sections are relatively short and there is only one really exposed section, right before the summit. We used a short 10 m rope for added security (a practice that has become the norm for us on difficult scrambles), but I'm sure most people would find it unnecesary. The summit view was fantastic in all directions - familiar peaks and former trips everywhere!

Some beautiful colours as we head up to the Smuts/Fist col; the end of Mount Smuts can be seen at the left

A close-up of the summit; the ascent route goes along the left side of the rock fin at the right of the picture

Mark at the summit; the peaks directly behind him are Commonwealth, Pig's Tail and Birdwood; in the far distance, Murray, French, Robertson, and Sir Douglas can be seen

An east-looking view; Tryst Lake is far below; the mountains in the background are Galatea (at the left) and Chester (at the far right)
