Opal Ridge (north summit)

  • October 5, 2001
  • Mountain height: 2,575 m (8,446 feet)
  • Elevation gain: 870 m
  • Round-trip time: 5:30

My first solo, moderate scramble.

I was a little nervous about doing a "moderate" rated scramble by myself - maybe that's why and got to the mountain so early I had to sit in the car for half an hour at the base of the mountain, waiting for the sun to rise. The mountain was initially quite steep and I was on all fours for much of it. It then leveled out and there was a nice hike to the base of the very steep and impenetrable-looking summit block. It wasn't half as hard as it looked, although I had a few routefinding problems and had to backtrack a short distance a couple of times. I was absolutely elated when I reached the summit - you would have thought I had just reached the top of Mount Everest.

Opal Ridge II (north summit)

  • Ascent time: 4:30

Scrambling with Mark, Colin, Ashraf, Holland, and Keung.

My second trip up the north end of Opal Ridge. I was hoping to complete the traverse to the south summit, however, our ascent was a little slow, and there wasn?t enough daylight to reach the south end. Once at the north summit, we continued on to the second high point, but had to call it a day there. The larches were changing and provided some beautiful contrasting colours.
