Photo Day along the Icefields Parkway and Mount Robson view; Viewpoint Lookout

  • May 11, 2003
  • Driving time: approx. 5.5 hours each way
  • Elevation gain: 425 m
  • Ascent time: 45 minutes
  • Descent time: 30 minutes
  • Roundtrip distance: 6.6 km + 1km (Overlander Falls)

Long drive and solo hike.

Over 11 hours of driving for an easy hike that took less than an hour and a half! Was it worth it?? Absolutely - an unqualified YES!! I seriously doubt that I will ever see so many stunning and magnificent scenes as I did on this beautiful Sunday in early May. The next time there is a completely clear day, during the winter or spring months, you simply have to take this drive, along the Icefields Parkway (highway 93 north) to Jasper, and then Highway 16 to Mount Robson. It provides a visual feast that is unparalelled. One of my most enjoyable days in the mountains and I didn't even summit a thing!

Howse Peak and the lower slopes of Mount Chephren (at the right)

The daunting east face of Mount Chephren; White Pyramid is to Chephren's right

Mount Saskatchewan

Mount Andromeda and the Athabasca Glacier to the right

Mount Christie and Brussels Peak are the mountains to the left and center of the picture, and the very tall mountain at the far right is Mount Fryatt (I think??)

My first look at glorious Mount Robson; you really have to see this mountain with your own eyes to appreciate its magnificence
