Solo scramble.

I don't know why, but Mount Rae has been the subject of a fair amount of bad press. I very much enjoyed the entire trip and actually preferred the summit panorama to that of many peaks in the area that are supposed to have a superior view. The scrambling is easy and fun, especially if you stay on the ridge, as opposed to dropping down to the obvious trail below. At the summit, it was still quite hazy from forest fire smoke, however, even in less than perfect conditions, the panorama was stunning in all directions. The Royal group could be seen to the west; Romulus, Remus, and the Banded Peak group to the northeast; the spiky points of Storm and Arethusa directly south; and the best part of the view - Mounts Elpoca, Tombstone, and Gap and their surrounding valleys, lakes, and meadows. Another attractive feature of this scramble is that it is very short and can easily be completed from car to car in less than 4 hours.

Mount Rae from near Ptarmigan Cirque Trail

Ptarmigan Cirque; the route goes around the left side of the slope on the left and then up to the pinnacle seen at the left of the picture

A section of the summit ridge; if you stay right on the ridge, there are a couple of mildly exposed parts, but nothing too challenging

Looking back down the ascent ridge at the pinnacle; Highwood and Grizzly Ridge are right behind and the peak at the far left is Mount Storelk
