Rimwall Summit

  • July 17, 2002
  • Mountain height: 2,680 m (8,790 feet)
  • Elevation gain: 1,020 m
  • Ascent time: 2:30
  • Descent time: 1:30

Solo scramble.

A cloudless, but somewhat hazy and windy day with very hot temperatures. I was almost at the pass when I ran into an older gentleman who recommended that I cut into the trees at that point. I did and he was right. He also told me that bears sometimes use the trail to get over the pass - I did alot of loud whistling from there on!

My timing was actually pretty good and after climbing over a few small rock bands, I only had to cut down the mountain a few meters to get over the large band mentioned in Kane's description. From there it was a short slog up to the ridge, where there were good views of the Windtower, Wind Ridge, Lougheed, and Canmore. The final scramble to the summit was a fun one, combining hiking with some very easy hands-on scrambling up small rock bands. It was straightforward and there was no exposure. At the summit the Three Sisters came into view. Some of the rock formations on Rimwall were very interesting, particularly the huge rock fin to the south. From the ground, it looked like that fin was the high point

For the descent, I decided to do the optional return down a drainage - it turned out to be a good choice, being more interesting and fun than going back the same way. A couple of hundred meters of good scree-surfing were a welcome start to the descent. The dry, but water-eroded drainage was very cool! (watch out for a couple of drop-offs that can be bypassed by going left). A good scramble and a fun day!
