Solo scramble.

I was, perhaps, expecting a little more from this scramble than it had to offer, and so after an hour of tedious hiking up an avalanche gully, I was starting to get somewhat impatient.  At the top an the gully you are confronted with fairly steep shale slopes. Kane's route traverses to the right, where you can gain the ridge and make your way to the summit. In search of a little excitement, I chose to go up the shale slopes. It certainly made for a more interesting (and dangerous) ascent, as the brittle shale would often break or shatter at a mere touch. The route steepened a little towards the top, but I made it up safely, and then to the summit, shortly after.

The summit view was excellent, especially given that we are planning a two day trip up Mount Ball in the near future. From the top you could see most of the route from Haffner Creek up to the snow-capped dome. Stanley Peak dominated the scene, looking just as difficult as Kane describes. Other noted mountain in the panorama were Deltaform, Temple, Castle, Goodsir, and Assiniboine, far off to the southeast.
