Thanks to Frank Herbert, and Paramount for letting me use the characters in this story. Darryl Burt. Dune: Voyager Voyager 1 A true seeker of knowledge uses not only logic but also has the passion of discovery and curiosity. --Spock- Federation Ambassador at large A sleek shape flows into vision, bow first, shaped like an arrowhead cutting through the ether of cold space. The aft section of the ship connected directly to the forward section and encompassed on either side by two rectangular shapes. Looking at the ship from the top view, the front section is elongated and rounded, the aft section short and bathed in the soft blue light from the nacelles. This is Voyager NCC 74656, Intrepid class, one of the best Starfleet designs next to Defiant, Galaxy and Sovereign classes. This starship had the best and at the time the most advanced technology Starfleet could offer. The problem is that this starship is a long way from Starfleet and it is the second Federation ship to reach and explore the Delta Quadrant. Dune 1 Customary to the Oral History, I have actually received visitors from another time but to me what is time. --Leto II- Stolen Journals From the Journals of Leto II God Emperor of Dune at Dar-es-Balat: This planet is mine and the planet is my owner. My father Muad'Dib said we are stewards of a planet, but I proved him wrong when I made my decision. This planet is mine and used to be called Dune but I changed the name back to Arrakis. This place that I engineered no longer has the vast sand dunes of my ancestors but rolling hills covered with verdant life. The legendary worms called Shai-Hulud by my Fremen ancestors are practically extinct except for me. I carry the remnants or sand trout of the worms, they are part of me and I am part of them. We live in a symbiotic relationship, they give me my longevity and I give them a place to survive. There is only one place on Arrakis that I can go and almost experience the Dune of my Fremen ancestors; it is called the Sareer. When I go back into the sand the land will be as it once was, desolate and dangerous like the old times. Voyager 2 The boon or bane with the universe is it not euclidean but cyclical, or space curves into it. Think of a three dimensional circle or a bubble. No matter where you go there you are. --Douglas Adams- author Captains Log Stardate 48536.1: Seven of Nine has made some modifications on the alien technology from Arturis' ship the "Dauntless". The modifications made to the warp engines by Chief Engineer Torres and Ensign Kim were not enough to keep Voyager in the "slipstream" without losing hull integrity. According to Seven the modifications made should give us at least a two or three-hour "slipstream" warp. Senior Staff lounge: In the lounge is Captain Janeway, Chakotay, Paris, Torres, Tuvok, Kim, Neelix, 7 of 9 and the Doctor. Captain, "We have seen a preliminary report from 7 of 9, this looks very promising. This technology may gets us back to the Federation faster than we anticipated, but let not get our hopes up. It could be dangerous for this ship and its crew. As I see it we have no choice to use the "slipstream" technology" "Seven, do you have a full report?" Seven of Nine, "I have been running simulations in the astrometrics lab comparing the modifications made by Torres and Kim, and the changes that I have been making. In the comparison the deflector shield is not able to keep the front of the ship protected from the "slipstream" matter, it is reducing hull integrity." Kim, "So what you are saying is that this so called matter is literally dissolving the hull?" Seven, "That is correct." Torres, "Then why does is not affect the rest of the ship?" Tuvok counters, "The aft part of ship is not affected as badly due to the flow of the matter around the bow." Captain, "What is the plan to alleviate this problem?" Seven, "Metaphasic shielding using rotation routines" Torres, "I saw that once in a paper written by a Ferengi and it was used by the Enterprise D at Borg incursion at Ohniaka." Chakotay, "I remember that, the Borg ship WAS destroyed." Seven, "The Borg contained the Hugh individuality, but we did lose several cubes." Captain, "In what way can the metaphasic shielding help us?" Seven, "The metaphasic shielding will be combined with multi-spatial frequencies that will rotate to protect the hull integrity." Captain, "You said in your preliminary report that the shielding will only protect the ship for a two or three hour flight in the "slipstream". Tuvok, "Yes, simulations according to Seven will only give the ship a two hour flight time." Kim, "This should give us a near 500 light-year distance from our present position. Captain, "That is acceptable, until we can find a way to increase the energy output to the shielding to give us more time." "If this is all, then I will give a decision in the morning, dismissed." Dune 2 The Ixians may never learn this that all science and no philosophy, or ethics would lead you down the path opposite of life. They tell me that the technology they create is not bad or good, it is just how it is being used. Look at what they are building and trying to hide from me in their no-rooms. Tell me what do they follow science or philosophy or both? --Leto II -from Dar-es-Balat The people of my time are short lived without the spice or melange from the worms of Dune. I told Inkiel my Atreides majordomo of my vision of the visitors. Inkiel, "My lord, what of the visitors from this ship, are they from another time?" Leto II, "No not from another time but from another universe, as I have said these voyagers will be in an accident that sends them to me." Inkiel, "Yes lord, what of the Fish Speakers and the Duncan when they find out of the voyagers." Leto, "They should not be concerned with the crew of the Federation ship Voyager." "What of my Peregrination, next week?" Inkiel, "The peregrination plans are well underway." Leto II, "You have done well!" "I will want the voyagers to be treated well and protected from harm." Inkiel, "Yes, my lord" Leto, "These people are dissimilar from the Ixians, some of their technology is more advanced and some of it is less. These people are different due to their training and upbringing. Their ethics and philosophy of technology are maybe what the Ixians will need to help make them a better people." "Inkiel, is the new ambassador from IX here yet? Inkiel, "No, my lord, he will not arrive until tomorrow." But Leto already knew that. Voyager 3 It is a good day to die!!!! --Unknown Klingon -Before battle Captains Log Stardate 48537:Since my decision was made this morning to go ahead with the new shielding and warp into the "slipstream". The crew and its captain are somewhat elated that we are getting closer to the alpha quadrant but apprehensive about using this new technology. On the bridge of the Voyager... Captain, "Ensign Kim is the shielding ready?" Kim, "Yes, ma'am, Seven of Nine confirms from engineering." Captain, "Lt. Paris is the course set and are we ready to navigate within the "slipstream"?" "Yes ma'am." "Engage." Paris, "Going to warp..., initiating slipstream." Tuvok, "We are in the slipstream." On the main screen, streaks and streams of gray matter or space pass the edge of the screen, looking like a cloudy gray tunnel. Looking at the outer hull of the ship a faint glow surrounds shields as the gray "slipstream" matter flows across them. A moment later the slipstream is rushing faster over the hull causing a heavier glow from the shields. Then a surge from the stream, much like a rock in the rapids, collides with the ship. Captain yells above the scream of the ship, "Report, what happened?" Kim, "Captain we have hit an energy surge in the stream!!!" Tuvok, yells,"Captain the surge is throwing us forward at a velocity that is off the scale." Chakotay, "Engineering report!!!" Torres, "I'm here, the slipstream cannot be shutdown, but the warp core has been shutdown!!" Seven, "The slipstream particles are no longer hitting the multi-spatial, and metaphasic shields." Kim, "It seems like we have hit a barrier and then surpassed it." Paris, "What your saying is that we hit the warp 10 barrier, like I did a few months ago." Tuvok, "That is correct" Captain Janeway, "Then where in the universe is this new slipstream taking my ship?" Kim, "Look at what is coming up, the sensors detect a rupture in the stream, Tom can you adjust the course heading to match our velocity with the rupture." Paris, "Trying to adjust the heading but helm is slow." In less time than a split second Voyager appears as a two dimensional plane coming into existence. The ship looks flat as if coming from a metal press. Not yet three dimensional, but in a splash of photons reflecting off the hull the ship regains its three dimensional shape. Janeway, asks "Where are we?" Dune 3 My father showed me what time was like, I was sitting at the precipice with him seeing all the lines of the future and the past. He told me to keep my eye on the present and I will never get lost. When I have visions of the future I see many threads and on one thread I see a group of travelers trying to get home. I had a suprise waiting for me. --Leto II -from Dar-es-Balat Leto calls to one of his Fish Speakers named Rosa, the long lanky bashar of his crypt corps, walked over to have her summon his majordomo Inkiel. Inkiel was already on his way. Leto already knew he was coming. Leto dismisses the bashar as Inkiel walks over and he tells him after the bashar leaves. Leto, "Inkiel, the voyagers are here in this galaxy, try to make communication with them." "They will be in the a Bene Gesserit system." "Give them the coordinates to this system." Inkiel, "Yes my lord." Leto, "Warn the Bene Gesserit to stay away from the ship." Voyager 4 Paradoxical time created by ships and their crews is confusing indeed but when the crew of the Voyager returned from the Delta quadrant with incredible stories especially of a voyage to another universe. --Isabel Manheim -Federation temporal boardmember in late 25th century Janeway, "Where are we?" Tuvok, "We are in our galaxy and in the Alpha quadrant" Chakotay, "You do not sound very convinced of your sensor readings." Janeway, "Project on the main screen the Alpha quadrant." Paris, "Wait, project the sensor data we have now against what is on the screen." Kim, "Look at the change in the coordinates of the stars they have moved." Tuvok, "Extrapolated and confirmed the Ensigns projections we are 10,000 years into the future." Kim, "We are in a system called Arcturus in our time, it seems to be inhabited by mostly women. Diverse agricultural and technological sites." Tuvok, "Captain, there are several ships coming up from the surface all fusion powered and has laser weaponry. Chakotay, "We can out run and out gun them." "Have they powered up their weapons?" Tuvok, "No sir, but they are holding position" Kim, "We are receiving a transmission or an energy wave." Janeway, "Can we interpret it." Tuvok, "The transmission is being interpreted by the universal translator." "It seems to be a variation of several Terran languages." Chakotay, "Is the transmission carrying an picture of the sender." Kim, "Yes, it seems to be a human, the computer is trying to emulate the wave packets." Captain, "Well, who ever he is we will try and extend a hand of friendship." Kim, "The transmission is coming in now." Inkiel, "Voyager crew this is Inkiel, majordomo of Leto II, God Emperor." "He extends his welcome to you and to visit his court." Janeway, "Can we transmit?" Tuvok, "I will need to have the computer match the carrier wave." After Tuvok made several adjustments, he says "you can now speak to him." Janeway, "This is Captain Janeway of the Federation starship Voyager." Inkiel, "Yes, we know who you are and where you came from." Janeway, "How did you know that we were coming?" Inkiel, "That will be discussed later when you arrive, do not tarry long, here are the coordinates to Arrakis." Tuvok, "Captain the sensors are picking up an object in front of us." "Picking up other objects surrounding us." "There also seem to be several hundred ships coming out of the spheres." "Now the spheres are disappearing and the ships are starting to arm their weapons." Kim, "They are like the other ships." he says in an excited voice. Janeway, "Shields up, get us out of here Tom." Paris, "Aye, Captain!!" Tuvok, "Their lasers are firing." The lasers hit the shields of the ship, slicing across the bow with other beams straddling the ship. The ship tremored under the hit but the shields held. While the shields were being hit there was a diffuse glow of red, a coronal effect. Kim, "Shields holding", he says excitedly. Tom, "Going to warp!!" Janeway, "Time to destination" Tom, "At warp 7, four hours." Janeway, "To help us avoid any other confrontations with any other inhabitants of this part of the galaxy go to warp 9." In view of the planet below the ship outside of the LaGrange point, Voyager disappears into a point in space into a blinding splash of light. The frigates that were bearing down on the starship were firing uselessly into space. Dune 4 Who knows better about people than I, I have seen these people and their ship, that I am the only one in this universe to see them first. They have the power to wipe out whole civilizations or change them, but according to their laws and ethics they had to spare other races the same problems they had. They have paid and learned from their mistakes. They are a very thoughtful and kind people. --Leto II -records recovered from Dar-es-Balat Inkiel walks into the lift to go the cold and dry crypt of his lord Leto II. He noticed the agitation of the Bene Tleilax embassy members in the main square of the City of Onn. The ambassador was yelling at his people and asking inquiring questions. As the lift when down he wondered what would happen to the Tleilaxu or what kind of punishment the God Emperor would meet out. Inkiel walks toward the God Emperor and he is talking to the Fish Speaker Bashar, Inkiel is standing respectively away from the conversation. Leto finishes his commands to the Bashar and she walks away. Leto, "Inkiel, what of the voyagers, was the message sent." Inkiel, "Yes, my lord." Leto, "The Tleilaxu have made a grievous mistake in attacking the starship, were any ships destroyed?" Inkiel, with consternation in his voice and his dislike of them, "No ships were reported destroyed." Leto says in a loud voice that even Inkiel and guards had to turn away, "I will have to seek them out and they will be punished for their sins." The Royal Guard shifted uneasily as did Inkiel, he knew the consequences of punishment, death for the attackers and loss of the years allotment of spice to the Bene Tleilax as well. Leto, "They are here." "Summon Duncan Idaho!!" Inkeil, "Yes, My lord." Inkeil motions to a guard and she runs off to find Idaho and bring him to the crypt. Leto, "Send a communication to the voyagers that we will greet them when we are able." The lift is heard coming to the last stop and the great Duncan Idaho, retainer and champion of the Atreides comes in to meet his lord Leto. Idaho, "You summoned me lord?" Leto, "Yes, Duncan, you may dismiss the guards first before we talk." Idaho gives a hand signal to the guard against the wall and they start leaving, going to the lift. Leto motions to Duncan and Inkeil to come closer. Leto, "I want to take a task force and find the Tleilax attack ships and wipe them out, here are the coordinates of the ships rendezvous." Idaho, "Yes my lord, may I ask why." Leto, "Later you will meet the reason why." After the Duncan leaves he says to Inkeil, "You may give them the signal come down." "Make sure that the planetary monitors will be alerted to the presence of the starship, we don't want any problems." Inkeil, "Yes, my lord." Leto, "Send the Ixian ambassador, we will need to talk." Voyager 5 If destiny is already known to us, then will we cease to exist? Leto, the God Emperor, told me that if we really knew our destiny then life would be meaningless and very boring. Logically, we would be lifeless and living only, to find extinction or a meaningful death. So Leto goes on to say that we are blessed that we will not know of our own destiny. --Tuvok -Memoirs of the Late 24th Century Janeway, "Open a hail to Inkeil, Ensign Kim." Kim, "Yes Ma'am." Captain, "Captain Janeway to Inkiel." Inkeils face shows up on the main screen, he is a young man with sharp features, a hawk nose, wide mouth and clear blue eyes. Inkeil, "Yes, Captain, I am here." "Here are the coordinates that Leto told me to give you." Captain, "We appreciate that, we will be beaming the first away team of me and most of my senior staff." Inkiel, not looking excited with a poker face but Captain Janeway could tell, she would have been a very good Bene Gesserit, says, "Come down when you are prepared." Inkeils face disappears from the main screen and Janeway turns to her bridge crew, "This is a momentous day for the Federation to finally be in another universe and to meet humans." Janeway, "Lt. Commander Emerson you have the bridge, all senior bridge staff come with me." Tuvok, Kim, Chakotay, and Paris follow Janeway to the transporter, then they get on the pads and soon they disappear in columns of light and into Leto's crypt. Leto hears the hum of the transporters and senses the 5 starship officers in the darkness. He decided to use the darkness technique as he uses it with the Duncans. No one else is in the crypt but him, Inkeil and the 5 officers. Leto, "Captain Janeway?" As per instructions from Inkeil, Janeway, was told to call Leto "my lord". Leto is in his Royal Cart that is sitting in a basin in the floor. There is one spotlight showing part of his bulk, he is not as large a worm yet. Janeway steps forward and see lines in the gray exterior like scales. When the captain steps closer she stops when a Leto's face is revealed to her. The face looks like it is in the hood of a parka or a coat with folds. She sees a face much like Inkeil, sharp features, hawk nose, wide set eyes and a full mouth. She thinks it odd to find such features connected to a gross body. She answers Leto as she was told to. Janeway, "Yes, my lord." Noting the captain's obvious suprise at his features, he tells her that she will not be harmed. The rest of the crew is far enough back to where they cannot see the exchange. Leto, "It comes to my attention that you have been attacked." Janeway, "Yes, my lord." "The ship suffered no damage and we were able to escape safely into warp." Leto, "The attackers were of genetically altered humans called Bene Tleilax, they will be punished for their indiscretion", he says with a growl. Janeway, "When we arrived we detected several space stations orbiting around this planet with laser weapons of the same make but more powerful." Leto, "Those space stations are monitors, strictly used for defensive purposes only." Janeway, "My lord may I introduce the rest of my senior staff." Leto nods toward her and she motions to Chakotay to bring the rest of the away team to the edge of the basin. Leto sees the away team walking towards him and sees the look of fearful curiosity. The team forms a semi-circle around the lip of the basin looking not at Leto but the captain. Their eyes looking at their captain for an explanation. Captain, "Lord Leto these are my senior staff, Commander Chakotay, Lt. Tuvok, Lt. Paris and Ensign Kim." Leto, "I am very pleased to meet you all, Lt. Tuvok you are not of the human race. Are you from a planet in the Epsilon system called Vulcan." Tuvok, "Yes, my lord" Leto, "This universe has never had an encounter with other races, especially human." Even Leto could read the Vulcan's features. As Leto greets the rest of the staff, he detects Inkiel coming down the lift. He motions Inkiel to the small group and makes introductions. Inkiel seems nervous and anxious, and Leto has not had time to scan ahead to see what was coming. Inkiel, "The Duncan requests a audience with you. End of Part 1. Part 2 coming soon.
